UNESCO en Guinness noemen al-Qarawiyyin in het Marokkaanse Fez, rond 857–859 als moskee gesticht door Fatima al-Fihri, het oudste nog werkende instituut voor hoger onderwijs ter wereld. Historici tekenen aan dat het pas in 1963 een universiteit in moderne zin werd.
