Japan is het enige land ter wereld dat getrouwde stellen verbiedt elk hun eigen achternaam te houden. Het staat in artikel 750 van het Burgerlijk Wetboek, en in zo'n 95 procent van de huwelijken is het de vrouw die haar naam opgeeft.
