In 1896 zei vrouwenrechtenactiviste Susan B. Anthony dat de fiets 'meer heeft gedaan voor de emancipatie van de vrouw dan wat ook ter wereld'. De fietsrage maakte ook de toen schokkende pofbroek populair.
