Mitsubishi betekent 'drie waternoten': hishi is de waternoot, en daarmee ook de ruitvorm in het logo. De drie verwijzen naar het familiewapen van de Tosa-clan, voor wie oprichter Iwasaki Yatarō werkte.

Mitsubishi means 'three water caltrops': hishi is the water caltrop, and by extension the diamond shape in the logo. The three nods to the crest of the Tosa clan, which employed founder Iwasaki Yatarō.
