TAAL GEWOON

The numerals 0-9 we use today are actually Arabic — which they learned from India in the 8th-9th century. That's why they're called "Hindu-Arabic numerals". The modern zero was defined in India in the 7th century by mathematician Brahmagupta. Before that, no culture had a special symbol for "nothing".
