Iers Gaelisch onderscheidt "brede" en "smalle" medeklinkers — afhankelijk van of de aangrenzende klinker uit de a/o/u-groep of de e/i-groep komt. Daarom heeft Iers vaak twee klinkers naast elkaar in spelling: één daadwerkelijk uitgesproken, één om de medeklinker-kleur aan te geven. "Sláinte" (proost) klinkt als "SLAWN-cha".
