John Cage componeerde in 1952 het stuk "4'33"": vier minuten en 33 seconden waarin de pianist géén noot speelt. De "muziek" bestaat uit alle toevallige geluiden in de zaal — kuchen, beschuiven van stoelen, regen op het dak. Het is misschien wel het meest besproken muziekstuk van de 20e eeuw.

John Cage composed "4'33"" in 1952: four minutes and 33 seconds in which the pianist plays no note. The "music" consists of all incidental sounds in the hall — coughs, shuffling chairs, rain on the roof. It is perhaps the most discussed musical work of the 20th century.
