Jan van Eyck painted the famous "Arnolfini Portrait" around 1434 — one of the first paintings with realistic perspective, mirrors and oil paint. In the mirror behind the couple two witnesses are visible — one of them is Van Eyck himself. On the wall is his signature and date, a sort of visual notarisation.
