Caravaggio (1571-1610) gebruikte als eerste echte mensen — boeren, prostituees — als modellen voor heilige figuren. De kerk was vaak verontwaardigd: zijn "Madonna van de Slang" werd uit het Vaticaan verwijderd nadat critici de jonge Maria "te vulgair" vonden. Hij stierf op de vlucht voor moord.

Caravaggio (1571-1610) was the first to use real people — peasants, prostitutes — as models for sacred figures. The church was often outraged: his "Madonna of the Serpent" was removed from the Vatican after critics found the young Mary "too vulgar". He died on the run for murder.
