Albert Camus stelde in "De Mythe van Sisyphus" (1942) drie reacties op het absurde: zelfmoord, religieuze sprong, of bewuste rebellie. Hij koos rebellie. Hij stierf in 1960 in een auto-ongeluk; in zijn jaszak vonden ze een ongebruikt treinkaartje voor dezelfde reis.
