In zijn latere "Philosophical Investigations" (postuum 1953) stelde Wittgenstein dat woorden geen vaste betekenis hebben — ze krijgen betekenis door gebruik in "taalspelletjes". "Hond" betekent iets anders bij een hondenbezitter dan bij een straatschoffie. Het revolutioneerde linguïstiek én psychologie.

In his later "Philosophical Investigations" (posthumous 1953) Wittgenstein argued that words have no fixed meaning — they take meaning from use in "language games". "Dog" means something different to a dog owner than to a street kid. It revolutionised linguistics and psychology.
