Leibniz argumenteerde dat onze wereld "de beste van alle mogelijke werelden" is — God had alle alternatieve werelden kunnen kiezen en koos deze als de optimale. Voltaire vond dit zo dwaas, na de Lissabon-aardbeving van 1755, dat hij "Candide" (1759) schreef als satire ervoor.

Leibniz argued that our world is "the best of all possible worlds" — God could have chosen any alternative world and selected this as the optimal one. Voltaire found this so foolish after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake that he wrote "Candide" (1759) as a satire of it.
