Karl Popper's "falsifiability"-criterium (1934): een theorie is alleen wetenschappelijk als hij toetsbaar is — als er voorspellingen uit volgen die mis kunnen gaan. Volgens Popper waren Marxisme en psychoanalyse daarom geen wetenschap; hun aanhangers vonden altijd een uitleg achteraf.
