Question

Did you know? Pluto was "demoted" to a dwarf planet by the IAU in 2006 because it does not "clear" its orbit of other objects — one of the three criteria for planet status. Many astronomers disagree; in the US, where Pluto was discovered in 1930, it remains a touchy subject.

Accepted Answer

Pluto was "demoted" to a dwarf planet by the IAU in 2006 because it does not "clear" its orbit of other objects — one of the three criteria for planet status. Many astronomers disagree; in the US, where Pluto was discovered in 1930, it remains a touchy subject.
