Picasso's "Guernica" (1937) reageerde op de bombardementen door nazi-Duitsland en fascistisch Italië op het Baskische dorp Guernica tijdens de Spaanse Burgeroorlog. Picasso weigerde het schilderij naar Spanje te sturen tot het land vrij was; het kwam pas in 1981 — zes jaar na Franco — terug.

Picasso's "Guernica" (1937) responded to the bombing of the Basque village Guernica by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso refused to send the painting to Spain until the country was free; it only returned in 1981 — six years after Franco died.
