Michelangelo schilderde het plafond van de Sixtijnse Kapel in vier jaar (1508-1512) — voornamelijk staand op een steiger met zijn nek naar boven. Hij was eigenlijk beeldhouwer en vond het werk vernederend, maar accepteerde het op aandringen van paus Julius II.

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling in four years (1508-1512) — mostly standing on a scaffold with his neck craned upward. He was a sculptor by trade and found the work humiliating, but took it on at Pope Julius II's insistence.
