Alexander Fleming waarschuwde al in zijn Nobel-rede van 1945 dat antibiotica resistentie zou opbouwen: "Het is niet moeilijk om bacteriën in het lab resistent te maken." Vandaag sterven jaarlijks ongeveer 1,3 miljoen mensen aan infecties die niet meer reageren op antibiotica.

In his 1945 Nobel speech Alexander Fleming already warned that antibiotics would build resistance: "It is not difficult to make microbes resistant to penicillin in the laboratory." Today around 1.3 million people die each year from infections that no longer respond to antibiotics.
