In de Griekse mythe vraagt Charon de veerman één obol-munt om de doden over de Styx te zetten; daarom werd in de oudheid een munt onder de tong gelegd bij begrafenis. Wie geen munt had moest 100 jaar wachten aan de oever.

In Greek myth, Charon the ferryman charged one obol coin to take the dead across the Styx; that is why ancient Greeks placed a coin under the tongue at burial. Those without a coin had to wait 100 years on the shore.
