In het oude China regeerde de keizer met "het mandaat van de hemel" — goddelijke goedkeuring. Maar slecht bestuur, hongersnood of natuurrampen werden gezien als bewijs dat de hemel het mandaat had ingetrokken. Opstand werd zo officieel gerechtvaardigd.

In ancient China the emperor ruled with "the mandate of heaven" — divine approval. But bad governance, famine or natural disasters were taken as proof that heaven had withdrawn the mandate. That officially justified revolt.
